NAKAYAMA

artist

they

The name of this work was given in the hope that it would evoke images of animals whose whereabouts are unknown.

She is using the term "they" for all animals that have not been identified.

She was often overwhelmed as she interacted with nature and animals.

She realized that although human tools should be evolving day by day, they are completely useless.

She learned again that nature is harsh and very frightening for people.

But at the same time, she was happy to know the weakness of human beings.

Because we felt that this feeling was the first moment when we could strongly feel that we are living on Earth.

This work is an installation art that employs water, wind, and aluminum balloons as main parts.

Numerous balloons in oval shapes create the very appearance of a swarm.

The balloons move through the space above the pond with the appearance of swimming fish.

This is powered solely by the buoyancy of the water and the force of the wind.

When the direction in which the wind blows changes, the balloon changes direction and moves across the surface of the water.

The timing of this work's movement and

where it will crowd together cannot be predicted or controlled by the viewer or even by the artist herself.

It must be in a different viewing state and look different in the morning, during the day, and at night.

We can experience the passage of time in the environment in which the work

is set while enjoying the fact that the work does not move as humans wish.

This work is completed by the changing colors of the sky, the flowing time.

And much influenced by the seasons, weather, and other changes in nature.

We can use senses other than sight to appreciate the work.

It will feel the wind and the sun and will appreciate the work as if he or she were gazing out to sea.

The diameter of the pond is 6 meters.

She dug the hole herself with a shovel on the ground of her college.

The doughnut-shaped white frame of the pond and the white disk floating in the water

were also handmade by her using wooden boards and FRP solvent.

The white disk floating on the water is pulled by the balloon blown by the wind, and pushed by the wind,

it moves on the surface of the water together with the balloon.

The shape of the balloons is not an exact oval but is designed to resemble the shape of a fish.

The head part of the balloon is thicker, and the tail part is thinner, allowing the rear part of the balloon to flutter in the wind.

This was also handmade by her by welding aluminum paper rolls specially designed for balloons.

The movement of these pieces allows the work to express the delicate movement of the wind created by nature.

The solid color of the aluminum roll paper she employed to make the balloons is silver.

However, she sprays painted the back and belly of the balloons white.

This was done for two reasons: the image of the school of fish she used as her motif, and the visual information her work represents.

The first reason is that fish schools reflect the sun's rays underwater due to the glow of their scales.

After experimenting with the appearance of the balloons, she says that by painting the balloons white,

she was able to mimic the glow of the fish school scales as she had seen them in the ocean and at the aquarium.

Second, painting the balloons reduces the area of the view reflected in the balloons.

By not having the entire landscape reflected in the work, the artist is able to control the amount of color information in the work.

This gives the balloons a less gaudy appearance, a look that is ideal for creating a peaceful space.
