Their territory, Our territory
In our daily lives, especially in urban areas, it often feels as though only humans inhabit the world. However, the calls of crows and sparrows remind us of their presence. At night, we might encounter creatures like Masked palm civet, frogs, snakes, or raccoons. If we look closely,
we realize that many living beings surround us.
These creatures may seem small to us, but the artist wanted to express their presence and the sense of distance between them and humans.
She sought to create a work that allows viewers to sense the existence of creatures hidden in the darkness, helping them realize that we share this land with other living beings. This awareness and the subtle distance between us are the themes she aimed to explore in her work.

This work is an outdoor installation that comes to life when viewers use flashlights to illuminate it in the darkness. The main components are fishing rods and reflectors. Due to the strong sea breeze at the exhibition site, the entire installation is designed to sway unpredictably in the wind. The reflectors attached to the tips of the fishing rods move lightly with the breeze.
The small light floating in the bottom right-hand corner of the above photo is this work of art.
The reflectors are placed at a distance from the viewers, subtly recreating the tension of encountering creatures at night and the phenomenon of animal eyes reflecting light. The exhibition is located in an open area atop a cliff with a panoramic view of the sea. To represent the space being surrounded by seven creatures, seven units have been installed along the perimeter of the area. Once viewers spot one of these creatures, they will soon realize they are surrounded by several others.
This work was independently created by Yumeo Nakayama for the art event "Sense Island Sarushima Dark Museum 2022." This event took place on Sarushima, an uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay, in 2022. The theme of the event was "Rediscovering the Senses of Nature, Life, and Action in a Museum of Darkness," and it was held exclusively at night.
Twenty artists participated in this art event, with 20 works displayed outdoors across Sarushima Island.
Visitors crossed the sea to the island on a special boat prepared for the event, leaving behind their cameras and mobile phones.
Equipped with flashlights, they explored the dark island to view the artworks. She was one of the invited artists and created a new piece specifically for this event.
— If you look closely, you’ll see they are there —
This work is designed to allow viewers to experience the feeling of facing nocturnal creatures as fellow living beings.
For those who don’t notice, a beautiful night view of Yokosuka’s harbor stretches out across the sea. But for those who do, they will discover that subtle yet undeniable presences are right at their feet.
